How fobs and chip keys work

Most cars built since the late 1990s have an immobilizer. A small transponder chip in the key head talks to the car when you turn it or press start. No matching chip, no start, even if the metal blade is perfect.

Remote fobs add buttons for locks and the trunk. Proximity fobs let you keep the key in your pocket. All of them need to be paired, or programmed, to that specific car.

Signs your fob needs attention

  • Range keeps shrinking
  • You press twice for one response
  • A dash warning says the key isn't detected
  • The case is cracked or the blade is loose

Start with a fresh battery. If that doesn't sort it, the fob or the chip may need replacing.

What replacement involves

A locksmith cuts the blade (if there is one) and programs the new fob or chip to your car. Many models can be done on site in a driveway in Newport Hills or a garage downtown. Some need dealer-only equipment, so ask when you call. Adding a spare while you still have one working key is usually simpler than replacing the last one.

What to have ready

  • Year, make and model
  • Your ID and the registration
  • Any working keys or fobs you still have
  • The exact location of the car

Cost

Vehicle keys and transponder programming start at $100 on the price list, plus the $29 service call fee. The final price depends on the key type and programming. More on car work on the automotive page.
