An emergency locksmith handles the lock problems that can't wait for a weekday appointment. Knowing what they can and can't do helps you make a quick decision when something goes wrong.
Typical emergency jobs
- Opening homes, apartments, offices and cars after a lockout
- Removing a broken key from a lock or ignition
- Securing a door after a break-in
- Cutting a working key on site
- Opening safes and file cabinets
- Changing locks when keys are stolen
What they won't do
A reputable locksmith will not open a door or car without reasonable proof that you're entitled to enter. Expect to show ID and something linking you to the address or vehicle. If you can't, they may need the owner or manager present.
After a break-in
- Leave the scene if you think someone is still inside, and call 911.
- Let police document the damage before repairs.
- Photograph the door and lock for insurance.
- Call a locksmith to repair or replace the lock and secure the door.
- Rekey any locks if keys were taken.
Costs and timing
Arrival time depends on the hour, traffic and which locksmiths are free. Ask for a current estimate when you call. Our price list shows starting prices plus the $29 service call fee; ask whether any after-hours charge applies.
