Apartment Lockouts: A Renter's Guide

Locked out of your Bellevue apartment? What to try first, when to call the property manager or a locksmith, what proof you need and how to avoid the next one.

1. Check the easy options

A roommate. A partner at work across town. A spare with a friend. A balcony door on the ground floor that you have a right to use. Any of these beats paying for a call-out.

2. Call the property manager

Many Bellevue complexes have an on-call maintenance line. Some will let you in for free during office hours; some charge a fee after hours. Check your lease or the resident portal.

3. Call a locksmith

If the manager can't help, call. Have proof of address ready: lease, utility bill, ID showing the unit. The locksmith opens the door with care for the lock. Lockouts start at $19 plus the $29 service call fee.

Don't change locks without permission

The landlord usually owns the locks. Changing them without approval can break your lease. If you lost a key or a roommate left with one, ask the manager about a rekey; many will agree if they get a copy. More on residential lock work.

Costs

Openings, rekeys and lock repairs all start at $19 on the price list, plus the call fee.
