Lock Repair: Fix It or Change It?

Sticky, loose or worn lock in Bellevue? How a locksmith chooses between lock repair, rekeying and replacement, plus simple maintenance to keep locks working.

Signs a lock needs attention

  • The key drags or needs jiggling
  • The deadbolt only throws if you push the door
  • The handle wobbles
  • The latch doesn't catch on its own

Repair, rekey or replace?

Repair when the lock is good quality and the fault is a part: a spring, a loose screw, a misaligned strike. Rekey when the lock is fine but too many keys are out there. Replace when the cylinder is worn through, the hardware is low grade, or you want a different kind of lock altogether.

In damp Bellevue winters, doors swell and strikes drift. Often the "broken" lock is a door that needs adjusting.

Simple maintenance

Use dry graphite or a lock-specific lubricant, not household oil, which collects grime. Tighten handle screws once a year. Check that the bolt fully enters the strike.

Costs

Lock repair starts at $19 and basic lock changes at $25 on the price list, plus the $29 service call fee. More on home lock work.
